Wolfwood Forest:
In Olsegon, on a July afternoon, 1950, Amber Green’s fourteen-month-old boy, Rusty, disappears from his playpen in the yard. A search progresses through mysterious Wolfwood Forest, adjacent to Amber’s house. Mark Snipe, sheriff, finds skimpy evidence.

While citizens and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police comb Wolfwood Forest all the way to the cemetery and marsh, Mark and Amber’s interaction rekindles memories of their relationship, her failed affairs, and shaky marriage. Pregnant with her older boy, Vincent, fathered by Mark, the nuns eject Amber from school. Drafted, Mark does not know that she carries his child. He experiences WWII on Dieppe beach, German prison, solitary confinement, and the death march.

On the second day, Mark connects clues. He guides the parents beyond Wolfwood Forest to an islet where they discover the kidnapper. Amber rescues Rusty, unharmed.

Massacre Island:
A year later, the rape and murder of teenager Lisa Surette on Fishermen’s Island stirs Olsegon. Townsmen and Lisa’s parents blame the mystery man who lives on Massacre Island, near Fishermen’s Island. Sheriff, Mark Snipe, not convinced and pressured, agrees to seek out the hermit.

War recollections still haunt Mark.

Reported by fishermen, the mystery man disappears on sight. No one knows where he came from.

Amber, divorced, she and Mark are lovers.

On Massacre Island, the sheriff leads four men up a cliff, in a forest, to an embedded marsh, sea cove, into caves where the team discovers skeletons, hieroglyphics, artifacts, who the mystery man is, and who murdered Lisa.

The Iraq War flaws Justin Caden. Out of the Army and home in Oklahoma, he sees life much different from when he left for the battlefield. He wants to forget combat, establish a sense of belonging and a way forward, and learn more about his parents and the country he fought for.

He regrets not having reconciled differences with his grandpa, Joseph Guillaume, who died while Justin was on the battlefield. His grandma, Madeline, gives him her husband’s laptop where Justin discovers a memoir, titled Beyond Acadia. He learns of his grandparents’ origin and their lives before they immigrated to the United States. He is inspired to visit the place of his ancestors—Chebec, Nova Scotia. He reads the memoir throughout the book. At home, he cannot find a footing. He drives cross-country, meets grassroots Americans, and visits Chebec. Redemption Island resides offshore and the legend says that it possesses paranormal powers. Of the men who have gone in its caves, some have returned cured of their demons, others never heard of again. And a few came back deranged, mad, had to be put away. A couple committed suicide. Redemption Island’s pull intensifies and Justin goes into its caves. The supernatural stone monolith launches him on a chaotic surreal journey. Escorted by enigmatic dwellers, Justin treads tunnels. He sees a shattered city. In a wasteland, an usher takes him on a tour by a graveyard. Other times, his brain flashes kaleidoscope images. He strolls along a dead river, drifts among people who have lost their will, like zombies. In metaphors, he witnesses corruption brewing. He views the reoccurrence of a famous event. At the core of the rock, he comes upon a lush pristine valley where across a river and through mental flashes, he knows its pre-1755 Acadia. His thoughts tell him that if he crosses the Aboiteau Bridge, he would never be able to go back. Under an immaculate sky, the sun shines over the mountains. Justin comes to realize that behind rough exteriors, a wonderful world awaits him, beyond.

My grandson served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Massacre Island, one of the two stories in my novel OLSEGON, won second place in the Central Oklahoma Roundtable of Authors, CORA’s 2005 contest. Oklahoma Gazette wrote a favorable review of OLSEGON in the November 1st, 2006 issue. The book is available for traditional publication. Seasoned Reader, an Oklahoma City monthly periodical, published my short story, “First Confession” in the October 2007 issue. Manuscripts for BEYOND ACADIA, DISHAMONY in PARADISE, SPLITS and FLASHES (short stories) are in the reviewing/editing process.
